Male Breast Reduction
“Gynaecomastia” is a Greek word which means “women like breasts”. Gynaecomastia is a swelling of the breast tissue in men. Gynaecomastia can affect men of any age or weight. Male breasts are relatively smaller when compared to the breasts of a female. Due to genetic reasons, imbalance in the hormone levels of estrogen and testosterone, use of certain drugs or other unspecified reasons, men may develop enlarged breasts. The swelling may reduce over a period of time by itself or it can be treated with the help of a surgery called the male breast reduction.

Preparation For The Surgery
The surgeon may need the complete medical history of the person. The patient may also be asked to perform certain medical tests like mammogram or breast x-ray prior to the surgery as the surgeon may need to examine the breasts.
The patient may have to stop smoking as smoking decreases the circulation of blood and interferes in the healing process.
The doctor may adjust the present mediations taken by the patient and may stop the intake of aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and other medications as it may increase bleeding.
The surgery begins by making an incision on the breast and the excess fat tissues are removed. As the size of the breast may become smaller or flatter, the surgeon may have to reposition the nipple or the aerola.
Care Taken After Breast Reduction
Soon after the surgery, an immediate change is seen in the shape and appearance of the chest. There may be minimal pain but soreness may remain for a few days. The doctor will discuss the dos and don’ts and how to get back to normal level of work and activity. The person will have to follow a strict diet and opt for a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise to maintain the new shape.
